Chapter 10:

Supply Chain

In this chapter, we examine the fragility of the supply chain, as manufacturing has rushed towards “Just in Time” delivery of goods and services.

Surface freight transportation in the U.S. is a $1 trillion market. Trucking constitutes 64% of the total U.S. freight by tonnage and approximately 80% of the total inland freight. The total addressable market of freight (not just surface) is $4 trillion, comparable to that of ride-sharing and delivery (which are around $5 trillion each).

But, by many accounts, the supply chain for mobility is broken.

By far the biggest cause of the Great Supply Chain crisis has been an acute shortage of truck drivers.

In this chapter, we explore how technology can help improve supply chain providers’ bottom lines. We also explore the world’s dependence on China for the electric vehicle supply chain.

Finally, we explore robotics and automation of the supply chain, as well as EV battery circularity: reclaiming used EV batteries to either reuse or recycle.
