Chapter 5:

Industrial tech: Agriculture, construction and mining

Self-operating tractors, fruit pickers, construction and mining equipment seem to be the first sector in which autonomy has taken hold. The reasons are pretty straightforward.

1. Autonomous ag-tech vehicles operate far from accident-prone passenger cars with human drivers on fast-moving highways.
2. They can travel along pre-approved tracks, so they don’t run into any interference.
3. They solve problems farmers, contractors and warehouses have right now in the real world.

This chapter explores the combination of electrification and autonomy, and what these technologies bring to these industrial segments. We also explore how robotics will complement human movement and drive productivity.
