Chapter 7:

R&D and Alternative Fuels

Electric batteries have captured most of our attention as the future of fuel. Looking at the tech landscape, though, it’s clear that, while electric batteries are ascendent for passenger vehicles, we shouldn’t be so quick to jump on an all-or-nothing, exclusively-electric bandwagon. Other technologies still have a role to play — and a larger role in vehicle types when we move beyond passenger cars.

In this chapter, we explore the transition from internal combustion engines (ICE) to electric vehicles (EVs). We explore the practicality of hydrogen as an alternative fuel for passenger cars, heavy trucks as well as for shipping.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) provides a lot of hope for cleaning up aviation emissions but has its own challenges in the short term.

We also explore nuclear power (both on land and at sea) and the promise of harnessing ammonia as a fuel.
